Netra basti (eye nourishment)

Service Description

Netra Basti, also known as Akshi Tarpana, is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy designed to nourish, soothe, and rejuvenate the eyes. During this treatment, warm medicated or plain ghee is gently pooled over and around the eyes, held in place by a soft dough ring that forms a protective seal. Once the ghee is in place, the client is invited to slowly blink, allowing the eyes to bathe in the nourishing oil. This process helps to lubricate the tissues, draw out heat and tension, and support overall eye health. Before the ghee is applied, the session begins with a calming head, neck, and shoulder massage, including stimulation of key marma points to prepare the body and encourage relaxation. Netra Basti is traditionally used to support a wide range of eye‑related concerns, including dryness, strain, fatigue, irritation, and conditions aggravated by excess heat or screen use. Many people find it deeply soothing, grounding, and clarifying for both the eyes and the mind. Although gentle and nourishing, Netra Basti is not suitable for everyone. The treatment should be avoided during any active eye infection (such as conjunctivitis or styes), acute inflammation, recent eye surgery, or when there is severe redness, discharge, or sensitivity to light. It is also contraindicated for individuals with glaucoma, detached retina, or any condition where pressure around the eyes is not advised. Avoid treatment if there are open wounds, rashes, or skin irritation around the eye area, or if the client has a known allergy to ghee. Caution is recommended for those experiencing migraines, severe sinus congestion, or acute headaches on the day of treatment, as well as for individuals who feel claustrophobic or anxious with treatments involving the eyes. In these cases, modifications or alternative therapies may be more appropriate.
